Mountain Day approved by Diet as new public holiday

The Diet (Parliament) approved on May 23 a bipartisan bill to establish Mountain Day (Yama no Hi) on August 11 as a new national holiday. Mountain Day will go into force in 2016 as the nation’s 16th public holiday.

Mountain Day is intended to give people opportunities to get close to mountains and appreciate benefits of mountains.

The Japanese Alpine Clubhas spearheaded the national campaign to create Mountain Day, with cooperation of four other major mountaineering-related organizations. The four other organizations are the Japan Mountaineering Association, the Japan Workers’ Alpine Federation, the Japan Mountain Guides Association, and the Himalayan Adventure Trust of Japan.
