UAAA general assembly, 20th anniversary celebration to be held in Hiroshima Nov. 22-25

The 20th anniversary of the Union of Asian Alpine Associations (UAAA) will be marked during its general assembly meeting to be held in Hiroshima on November 22-25.

The UAAA general meeting is organized by the Japan Alpine Association (JAA) and the Hiroshima Mountaineering Association, and is supported by the Japanese Alpine Club (JAC), among other organizations.

The four-day event, called Hiroshima Mountaineering Peace Festival, will include a ceremony to celebrate the UAAA’s 20th anniversary in Peace Memorial Park and a commemorative symposium on “mountaineering and preservation of the mountain environment” at the ASTER Plaza convention complex, both on November 23.

The annual general assembly meeting on November 25 will discuss the UAAA’s plans for actions and strategies to promote mountaineering activities in Asia, environmental conservation amid global warming and cooperation among members.

The UAAA was established in 1994 to promote mountaineering activities in Asia, two years after the International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation (UIAA) general assembly was held in 1992 in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture – for the first time ever in Japan. The UAAA, headquartered in Seoul, has 16 members (alpine associations and other mountaineering organizations) from 12 countries in Asia.
